Hub & Spoke Communities is a minority-owned infill housing developer based in San Diego. The company’s mission is to make cities more inclusive and sustainable by building urban middle-income housing that integrates with the surrounding community and encourages a healthier lifestyle.
Hub & Spoke focuses on building apartments in walkable neighborhoods that embrace the "15-minute city" concept; to reduce dependence on driving, all of their communities are located in neighborhoods with restaurants, retail, and parks, and where the majority of one’s daily errands can be completed within a 15-minute walk or bike ride and close to alternate modes of transit (bus, trolley, e-scooters).
Hub & Spoke’s apartment buildings intentionally do not include luxury amenities such as a pool or gym. Instead, Hub & Spoke focuses on offering tall ceilings and large window openings to allow light and ventilation within units and landscaped common areas or central courtyards that promote residents' well-being and interaction with each other. Since Hub & Spoke doesn't provide a lot of onsite amenities, the developer can offer more competitive pricing for the budget-conscious urban dweller.
“Hub & Spoke Communities is aligned with Mission Driven Finance in creating a more sustainable built environment by providing mixed-income housing in transit-friendly locations,” said CEO Alexander Alemany.
With participation from Civic Communities, the Advance Strategy provided capital for Hub & Spoke Communities to refinance the acquisition of a property in the Golden Hill neighborhood of San Diego, planned to become 65 rental units over four floors.
