Meet Stacy (CARE House #19)
About the property
This 1972 home is located on a corner lot in Southeast Las Vegas, a new neighborhood for CARE. The home boasts a two-car driveway with additional street parking for safer drop-offs and pickups, and a well-sized fenced rear yard. The spacious child care area, created by combining the existing kitchen, a family room, and a laundry room, features direct access to the relocated kitchen and a view of the backyard through a sliding door. A new half bathroom was added to the child care area in place of the laundry room, while laundry was moved to the garage. These changes help create a cohesive child care space with better visibility to see and support kids in the tenant’s care.
About the provider
A mother of six and grandmother of six, Stacy was born in Connecticut and raised in California. As a manager at a quick-service restaurant, Stacy was determined to spend more time with her children and provide them with quality care and education at home. For nearly 14 years, Stacy ran a successful family child care in California while homeschooling her children. When her children were grown, Stacy relocated to Las Vegas to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
“I was having fun the first few months in Vegas, but felt the itch to work again,” Stacy shared.
Stacy quickly gained experience at a child care center, followed by serving as a coach for CARE Nevada providers at Sunrise Children’s Foundation, an early care and education nonprofit that offers Early Head Start programs.
Ready for the next move, Stacy figured she’d try for CARE Nevada herself.
“I didn’t think that I would be back in family child care,” Stacy admitted. “The more time I spent around children, the more I missed what I used to do. That’s who I am.”
Being matched with a CARE home brought myriad emotions.
“I remember I was putting the key in the door when I heard my watch go off, saying I have an email. I looked at my watch, and in big bold letters it said, ‘YOU’VE BEEN MATCHED.’ That is the best wording I have ever seen in capital bold letters. I was standing at the door, still looking at my watch, and I was like, Am I seeing this?”
Though the neighborhood was unfamiliar, Stacy embraced the opportunity to explore a new community.
“The house was more than I needed. I love the way CARE thought it out,” Stacy said. “I love having my own space. The open layout has allowed my creative mind to just really do what I want to do, a space for me to have a life and to run my business.”
